NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard has announced the expansion of the state's medicinal cannabis trial for chemotherapy patients to seven more hospitals, including Campbelltown, Concord, Royal North Shore, Calvary Mater Newcastle, Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie Base and Wollongong.
Chris O'Brien Lifehouse in Camperdown is leading the trial, comparing a cannabis product with standard anti-emetic treatments to manage chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting.
"NSW is leading the country in developing much-needed evidence for the use of medicinal cannabis by investing $21 million in ground-breaking clinical trials, research and reforms," Hazzard said - with $1m going to cultivation research "which will ensure any future domestic industry is of a high quality and suited to local conditions."
Findings and recommendations of the Review of the Medicinal Cannabis Compassionate Use Scheme conducted by Professor Mary O'Kane AC, were released yesterday recommending access for the terminally ill and a safe legal pathway of access for others - CLICK HERE for the report.
