Blood pressure alert

THE Heart Foundation, along
with the George Institute for
Global Health, have called for an
“evidence-based 21st century
approach” to blood pressure
management, in contrast to older
notions of ‘hypertension’ as a
disease rather than a risk factor for
cardiovascular events.
A paper to be delivered today at
the Heart Foundation conference
in Adelaide claims that doctors and
patients have become complacent
about blood pressure, with a riskbased
approach not widely adopted
in clinical practice - despite the
fact that hypertension has been
identified as the world’s leading
health risk by the Global Burden of
Disease Study.
The approach advocated would
“ensure that all patients who
will benefit from blood pressure
lowing receive proven treatments,
which will improve outcomes for
individuals and could massively
reduce costs across the Australian
health care system,” the Heart
Foundation said.
