BLOOD pressure drug verapamil could improve insulin therapy in adults with new onset type 1 diabetes, according to research published in Nature Medicine.
The antihypertension drug was tested at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in the US in a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase 2 clinical trial with 11 subjects receiving verapamil with standard insulin therepay for one year, and 13 on only insulin.
The researchers found verapamil helped preserve beta cell function while also reducing the increased need for insulin as the disease progressed.
Verapamil also reduced the incidence of hypoglycemic events.
