Infant colic probiotic
January 22, 2014
Infantile colic, gastrooesophageal
reflux, and
constipation are the most common
GI disorders during the first six
months of life and may now be
reduced in impact by the use of a
probiotic, new research has shown.
These functional disorders
frequently result in hospitalisation,
feeding changes, use of drugs,
parental anxiety and time off work.
Published recently in JAMA
Pediatrics, a prospective,
multicentre, double-masked,
placebo-controlled randomised
clinical trial in Italy involving 589
newborn infants demonstrated
potential positive benefits from
prophylactic administration of
Lactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938.
