IN A horrific story of terrible healthcare, a German care worker has confessed to giving elderly patients drugs to keep them quiet so that he could sleep off his hangovers.
The man, who also allegedly falsely purported to have nursing qualifications, is facing charges of murder and attempted murder, after two of those in his care died, while six others survived after being successfully resuscitated.
Prosecutors allege that the 26-year-old secretly gave blood thinners, adrenalin or sedatives to elderly patients after they came out of surgery.
At a hearing this week he confessed to often drinking alcohol before shifts at Munich's Rechts der Isar teaching hospital.
"As I was inebriated, there was only one option for me: to sedate them.
"I am deeply sorry," he said, adding that he had not intended to kill anyone.
The alleged offender admitted to doing as little as possible during his shifts, only sitting patients up before doctors made their rounds, while turning those in wheelchairs towards the wall so they were calmer and didn't try to engage him in conversation.
