GET ready to say goodbye to dentures and hello to your very own Tooth Fairy 2.0.
The world's first human trial for a drug that can regrow teeth is set to begin in a few months.
Yes, you read that right - real, actual teeth.
The trial will take place at Kyoto University Hospital and could make trips to the dentist feel like a visit to a wizard by 2030.
Starting this Sep, 30 men aged 30-64, each missing at least one molar tooth, will line up for this miraculous intravenous treatment.
After successfully growing new teeth in ferrets and mice without significant side effects, the researchers are ready to test their magic on humans.
"We want to help those who are suffering from tooth loss, and we are here to deliver," said lead researcher Katsu Takahashi.
After this 11-month trial, the researchers plan to expand their testing to children aged two to seven years with congenital tooth deficiencies, a condition affecting 1% of people.
The team is currently recruiting these young volunteers, who will hopefully one day tell their stories of the medical marvel.
The magic potion works by deactivating a protein called USAG-1, which normally suppresses tooth growth.
Blocking this protein's interaction with others encourages bone morphogenetic protein signalling, which triggers new teeth to sprout.
