THE Australian Pharmacy Council (APC) has applauded the announcement from NSW Premier Chris Minns that the University of Technology Sydney and University of Newcastle are aiming to offer full-scope training for community pharmacists from 2026 (PD 05 Sep).
"We welcome and fully support the initiative to embed Pharmacist Prescriber programs across universities, enabling accessible, people-centred care," said CEO Bronwyn Clark.
"APC plays a critical role in ensuring these new programs are rigorously quality-assured and aligned with national standards, so that graduates are equipped with the skills to practise safely, effectively, and to the top of their scope," she explained.
Clark noted that APC has accredited three pharmacist prescriber programs - James Cook University, the Queensland University of Technology and the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia Prescribing Training Program.
There are several more programs progressing through the assessment process.
"We are working closely with these institutions as they prepare and submit their applications for accreditation," Clark said.
"Once accredited, these programs will be ready to welcome enrolments, expanding opportunities for pharmacists and strengthening the capability of the health workforce," Clark concluded. KB
