New CM pharmacy resources
June 28, 2013

A RANGE of new resources have
become available to Australian
pharmacists, to assist them in
managing potential interactions
between prescription and
complementary medicines their
patients may be taking.
An initiative of the Blackmores
Institute, the practical tools, which
inlcude a CM interactions guide and
free CPD modules, aim to support
pharmacists in advising patients on
concomitant medicine use.
With two in three Australians
using complementary medicines, it
is vital that pharmacists’ knowledge
meet the needs of their customers,
according to Blackmores Institute
Director of Education, Pam Stone.
“Consumer demand for CMs
continues to rise, with pharmacy
being a primary point of access.
“However recent research
confirms that pharmacists
often lack knowledge about the
suitability of various CM and
prescribed medication combined
use,” Stone said.
“This CM interaction guide offers
an evidence-based reference in
an easy to use format which a
pharmacist can use to help advise
patients on their medicine use.”
In addition, Blackmores Institute
is now providing free accredited
education programs to GPs and
pharmacists with the first in a
series of CM education modules
launched in recent months.
A CM interactions guide is now
available in hard copy and online at
www.blackmoresinstitute.org.
And Blackmores is one of the
providers of the complimentary
CPD short courses now available
through the Australian College of
Pharmacy (PD yesterday), with
three group 2 credits available for
completion of the Drug Influences
on Nutrient Levels online seminar.
