Fresh vanilla perfume anyone? Castoreum is an anal secretion beavers use to mark their territories, but it also happens to smell like vanilla. According to a recent National Geographic story, although the substance is non toxic, because of the castor sac’s proximity to the anal glands, it often contains anal secretions and urine. The US FDA calls the beaver goo a “generally safe” additive for food and early last century scientists regularly put it into foods labelling it as “natural flavouring”. However nowadays there are tighter regulations and alternative products so vanilla flavouring is no longer based on the beavers. Because it is tricky to “milk” a beaver’s castor sac, the product is not available to the mass market, but dried sacs can be harvested from dead beavers and fetch up to $60 each.
