Plant meds potential

The potential of naturally occurring compounds is still largely untapped, a report in the Journal of Natural Products has said. In a comprehensive review by the National Cancer Institute, Natural Product chief, Dr David J. Newman, analysed the origins of all anticancer agents stretching back as far as the 1940s. He reported that of 206 small molecules approved for cancer treatment, a remarkable 41% were natural products, and an additional 22% were derived directly. “We strongly advocate expanding, not decreasing, the exploration of nature as a source of novel active agents.”
