Depression stigma

ONE third of all people suffering major depressive disorder (MDD) do not seek medical help, according to the latest research released by Datamonitor. According to analysts, the reason for this avoidance may be due to people’s fear of the “stigma that is still attached to depression”. Characterised by feelings of sadness, loss, anger or frustration which interfere with daily life, MDD may also be under-treated, according to researchers, because patients are unaware that their symptoms are representative of a disease, not due to normal life experiences.
