EXPOSURE to nicotine can increase the blood pressure of children as young as four years old, according to a new study conducted by the University of Heidelberg in Germany. The study looked at the blood pressure of 4,236 kindergarten children and found that those with a parent who smoked were 21% more likely to have systolic blood pressure in the top 15%. “Childhood blood pressure consistently tracks into adult life,” said study author, Dr Giacomo Simonetti. “Removing any avoidable risk factors as soon as possible will help reduce the risk for heart disease later on and improve the long-term health of children,” he added.
