RECENT research has revealed that two forms of vitamin E have conflicting effects on respiratory function, one being protective and the other promoting lung inflammation and airway hyperresponsiveness. The work, out of Chicago’s Feinberg School of Medicine, examined both the α-tocopherol isoform of vitamin E and the isoform γ-tocopherol in an analysis of 4,526 adults in the ‘Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults’ (CARDIA) multi-center cohort with available spirometry and tocopherol data. Published in the journal Respiratory Research, the study followed up patients for 20 years and highlighted the role of vitamin E as an anti-oxidant. CLICK HERE to read the paper.
