Industry (ASMI) said National
Healthy Bones Action Week (03 to
10 Aug) spotlighted osteoporosis
and emphasised the role of calcium
and vitamin D in preventing it.
It is estimated that 1.2m
Australians have osteoporosis and a
further 6.3m have low bone density
(osteopenia).
ASMI regulatory and scientific
affairs director Steve Scarff said
calcium was essential in the
development, maintenance,
structure and strength of bones.
“The other nutrient vital for bone
health is vitamin D, which enhances
the absorption of calcium and
phosphorus, regulates blood levels
of calcium and is essential for bone
