Eliminating HIV transmission in NSW
August 28, 2014
AROUND 1,000 new HIV
diagnoses are notified annually
in Australia but in 2012, after 10
years of relative stability, NSW
notifications experienced a 24%
increase, according to new research
published in the Medical Journal of
Australia.
Men who had sex with men
(MSM) constituted 78% of all
notifications, it found.
Free HIV testing targeting the highrisk
populations of MSM, injecting
drug users and sex workers had long
been accessible in NSW, but many
MSMs did not engage with the
health system, the article said.
In 2013, NSW Health launched
pop-up HIV testing in the form of a
clearly marked caravan in Oxford St,
Darlinghurst, testing 195 MSMs.
