THE FDA has issued a warning
over the cough medication Tessalon
(benzonatate), which says that
accidental ingestion of the drug by
children under 10 years of age “can
result in serious side effects or death”.
Tessalon is approved in the US for
the symptomatic relief of cough in
patients older than 10, but its
candy-like appearance (round,
liquid filled capsule) often attracts
children under ten years of age.
“The safety and effectiveness of
benzonatate in children younger
than 10 years has not been
established,” the FDA said.
The FDA warned that the drug
should be kept in a child-resistant
container, and out of the reach of
