The International Pharmaceutical Federation has issued an official policy statement on the role of pharmacists in reducing the effect of medicines on the environment.
"Pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists must take responsibility for mitigating the environmental consequences of medicines," the statement reads, with the policy encompassing the entire course of medicines use from manufacture and distribution through to prescribing and dispensing.
Disposal and reduction of the discharge of metabolites into the environment is also a key issue - to view the policy see www.fip.org.
