MORE than 20 countries have taken steps to introduce Australian style plain packaging for tobacco products and it is likely that more will follow, according to Australian experts who looked into the World Trade Organization's (WTO) recent decision to allow plain packaging.
The WTO's dispute settlement panel's legal findings confirm that intellectual property interests can be limited for other societal interests, such as public health objectives, supporting the Australian High Court decision of 2012 dismissing a constitutional challenge.
