DRONE technology has enabled the vaccination of 13 infants and five pregnant women on a remote island in Vanuatu, with UNICEF arranging for the injection to be flown about 40km across an impenetrable mountain range.
The medicine, along with a temperature logger, was carried in a small styrofoam box (pictured), with the incident believed to be the first time people have been immunised with the assistance of a commercial drone.
"Today's small flight by drone is a big leap for global health," said UNICEF executive director, Henrietta Fore.
"Drone technologies can be a game-changer for bridging that last mile to reach every child," Fore said, with the drone supplied by Australian firm Swoop Aero.
