A new study recently published in the Journal of Psychometric Research has highlighted two previously unidentified factors which may affect patients' adherence to treatment.
The research found some patients were reluctant to take medication as it was a "reminder" of their illness, while the other new factor was a desire to "test" the treatment, by reducing or omitting it entirely to see if their illness is present.
The study involved patient cohorts from three different clinical areas: hypertension (n=175), oncology (n=115) and gout (n=196).
The University of Auckland study was highlighted by Sydney-based Atlantis Healthcare, which works to develop health psychology evidence-based patient adherence solutions - see the full publication at sciencedirect.com.
