MISTAKES by staff remain the biggest cause of cyber breaches in the healthcare sector, security firm, Kaspersky reports.
In the two years since the Wannacry ransomware attacks crippled healthcare providers around the globe there has been a significant reduction in the number of medical devices attacked.
Kaspersky reported that 30% of hospital devices were infected with a virus in 2017, while attacks impacted just 19% this year.
The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner's latest Notifiable Data Breaches Quarterly Statistics Report to 30 Jun, revealed the health sector experienced the highest number of breaches of any industry (47) ahead of the financial services sector (42), with human error the top cause of breaches.
However, the healthcare industry was also susceptible to malicious or criminal attacks (22).
