PETRICONE'S Pharmacy on East Main Street in Torrington, Connecticut is celebrating its 90th year in business.
Third-generation owner, Joe Petricone, explained that his grandfather Fiore Petricone opened the pharmacy in 1930, which managed to outlast a flood in 1955, and, more recently, withstand competition from pharmacy giants, making it one of the few smaller ones left in the area.
"The corporate pharmacy models are tough to live up to, and we have to make money to survive," Petricone said.
Perhaps one of the keys to Petricone Pharmacy's survival is its diversity - in addition to the store's pharmaceutical practice, it also provides equipment to group homes, assisted living facilities and nursing homes.
There's no question that business is booming, with Petricone preparing to open a second family-owned pharmacy in New Hartford, New York, in Mar.
"My father used to say, 'Joe, we don't have customers, we have friends'...that's the way we try to look at every person who comes through that door," Petricone said.
