QUEENSLAND pharmacy owner, Curtis Shea Mickan, is facing two attempted murder charges and multiple counts of domestic violence following a house fire in the Brisbane suburb of Wooloowin on Sun morning.
Mickan allegedly sparked the blaze while his partner and one of her relatives were inside, with emergency services being called to the scene at 6.15am, and both women escaped uninjured.
The 34-year-old pharmacist, who is an owner of the Amcal Pharmacy Murgon, handed himself in to police at Hendra Station in Brisbane just over five hours later.
Queensland Police noted "he had been charged with two counts each of attempted murder and arson (vehicle and house) and one count of contravention of a police protection notice".
"He was further charged with one count each of assault occasioning bodily harm, common assault and wilful damage (all domestic violence offences) in relation to earlier incidents at the same address," police said.
Mickan's lawyer, Tam Elabbasi, did not apply for bail during a hearing yesterday at Brisbane Magistrates Court.
Elabbasi described it as "a totally unfortunate set of circumstances".
"Somebody has lost everything - it's terrible," he said.
"We just need to go through the process."
Women's Legal Services Queensland CEO, Angela Lynch, told ABC News the incident highlighted the need for a review of police procedures to help them "make better assessments".
"There is a situation of urgency here in relation to our responses," she said.
"This is difficult territory ... but we really need a government response.
"I think we need an independent assessment ... we have to review the whole process."
