A PHARMACY in the US state of Kentucky will pay US$9.25 million to settle allegations that it received illegal payments from Abbott Laboratories for promoting Depakote to nursing home patients. PharMerica Corporation of Louisville allegedly received kickbacks which were disguised in the form of rebates, educational grants and other financial support from Abbott, according to news agency Associated Press. PharMerica specialises in “comprehensive long term pharmacy services” for a range of institutions including aged care and assisted living facilities. The settlement should serve as a reminder to pharmaceutical companies and their clients that their activities are being monitored, said US Attorney Anthony P. Giorno. He said it was important that nursing home residents be provided appropriate drugs based on their needs, rather than “the business interests of the companies providing the drugs”.
