BRITAIN'S Department of Health and Social Care has issued Serious Shortage Protocols (SSPs) for three penicillin medicines "to help mitigate local supply issues".
The measure follows widespread reports of shortages (PD 15 Dec) due to surging demand to treat an outbreak of Strep A.
The SSPs will allow pharmacists to supply alternative forms of phenoxymethylpenicillin if they cannot access the specific formulation on a prescription.
Officials insisted the supply issues were "temporary".
