APP2016 to examine UK pharmacy model

IAN Strachan, chair of the UK
National Pharmacy Association, has
been announced as another key
presenter at next year’s APP2016
conference on the Gold Coast.
Strachan will share his experience
of the recent significant changes
to the UK health sector and key
learnings for pharmacists.
According to APP chairman Kos
Sclavos, Strachan’s input will be
important in the light of the Sixth
Community Pharmacy Agreement,
in which professional services
funding requires pharmacists “to
jump through more hoops than
ever before.
“The UK system of commissioning
and contracts for funding has, on
many occasions, created an unfair
playing field for pharmacy.
“Funding has not been
sustainable and, for many UK
pharmacies, a fair return for the
services provide has not been
achieved,” Sclavos said.
He warned that the 6CPA system,
where funding for programs
is contingent on a positive
recommendation from a body such
as the Medical Services Advisory
Committee, “may create similar
issues”.
