Youyou Tu is a “big win” for
Traditional Chinese Medicine
(TCM).
Tu is the first China-based
scientist to win a science Nobel,
and has been recognised for the
development of the antimalarial
drug arteminisin (qinghaosu) in the
late 1960s and 1970s.
Arteminisin-based combination
therapies are recommended by the
World Health Organization as the
first-line treatment for malaria.
Tu was the first to extract the
biologically active component of
the Chinese herb Artemisia annua
(sweet wormwood) which led to
the clinical study and eventual
