Asthma relief?

A NEW trial conducted by Asthma
New Zealand and published in the
Journal of Allergy and Clinical
Immunology has found that an oil
extract for the Perna canaliculus
called PCSO-524, (tradename
Lyprinol) may improve the quality
of life for children suffering asthma.
Reported this week on Today
Tonight, the trial found that while
the supplementation of PCSO-524
did not reduce the amount of
medication the children were
taking, “there were trends noted to
improved quality of life (Juniper
Scale Measure) and a decreased rate
of moderate asthma exacerbations
in those children randomised to the
active compound”.
The Juniper Scale Measure was
filled out by the children’s parents
and was developed to measure
three functional challenges
(physical, emotional and social)
that are most troublesome to
children living with asthma.
Speaking about the results, study
head Jim Lello said “This study does
not provide evidence for children
stabilised on preventer medication
to reduce their inhaled
corticosteroid dose but shows
some promising results regarding a
potential for this product, used in
conjunction with existing asthma
medication, to reduce
exacerbations and improve quality
of life for the children and families
with moderate to severe chronic
persistent asthma”.
“The researchers would like to
see the results of similarly designed
but larger studies in other
population groups with moderate
to severe asthma,” he added.
