INCREASING rates of whooping
cough across the country has
highlighted the need for vaccination
and isolating the infected,
according to Dr Philip Britton and
Prof Cheryl Jones of the Children’s
Hospital at Westmead and the
Sydney Emerging Infectious
Diseases and Biosecurity Institute.
Writing in the latest issue of
Australian Prescriber, the duo said
that whilst the current national
immunisation schedule
recommends vaccinating infants at
two, four and six months of age
with booster doses at four and 15-
17 years, waning immunity has
been seen in older children and
adults with this schedule.
For this reason, the pair said
booster vaccination is now
recommended for groups in contact
with people at high-risk.The above article was sent to subscribers in Pharmacy Daily's issue from 15 Jun 12 To see the full newsletter, see the embedded issue below or CLICK HERE to download Pharmacy Daily from 15 Jun 12
