DENTAL hygiene was definitely front of mind for a thief in the USA this week, who was arrested after allegedly stealing more than US$1,300 worth of toothbrushes from a pharmacy.
Police responded to a call from the Walgreens outlet in Florida after witnesses claimed they saw the offender walking out of the store without paying for the six electric toothbrushes he was allegedly carrying.
Officers said the store's employees watched the man get into a white Lexus and drive away with the contraband.
Police followed the vehicle and eventually ordered the 37-year-old driver to pull over.
He apparently admitted to stealing the items, telling officers he had thrown the stolen toothbrushes off a bridge during the pursuit.
The man was ultimately charged with larceny and remanded into custody, and is expected to face a hearing in the coming days.
It's still unclear what his motivation was for the theft, but when he testifies in court he's expected to tell the judge his story is "the tooth, the whole tooth & nothing but the tooth".
