A US senior quality control analyst has revealed to TikTokers exactly how gross a gym shower floor is - and the video has attracted over 14,000 views.
Nick Aicher (@howdirtyis) shared a clip that showed him swiping a cotton bud over a gym floor, then onto a petri dish, where a thick layer of bacteria eventually grew on top.
"That's why you should wear some flip flops," Aicher said.
Dan Baumgardt, senior lecturer at the School of Physiology, Pharmacology and Neuroscience at the University of Bristol, wrote an article in The Conversation about the dangerous bacteria lurking at the gym, particularly the bacteria found on treadmills, dumbbells, weight machines and exercise bikes, such as salmonella and klebsiella, which are associated with food poisoning and pneumonia.
"Any good gym should provide materials for users to wipe down and sanitise equipment before and after use," he wrote.
