AUTHORITIES in the Indian state
of Kerala have imposed a new ‘fat
tax” on fast food items, in the aim
of curbing obesity and making
people more informed about their
food choices.
The 14.5% tax applies to
burgers, pizzas, tacos and
doughnuts served in branded
restaurants such as McDonald’s
or KFC, and is an initiative of a
recently elected Communist Party
government.
The impost has attracted
criticism from across the board,
with a number of stakeholders
pointing out that “a lot of local
food is more fatty and unhealthy.
“Just because you serve pizza
and burger doesn’t mean other
people are serving healthy food,”
according to a Kochi cafe owner.
However officials are not
sympathetic, saying lifestyle
diseases are on the rise.
The junk food tax is likely
to be just the start, with the
government also flagging plans to
broaden the levy to also include
sugary drinks in the near future.
CENTURIES of preciously curated
hair are on display at a museum
in Philadelphia, which has this
month put the locks of some early
presidents on show.
Drexel University’s Academy of
Natural Sciences is showcasing
hair once attached to the heads
of pioneering statesmen such
as George Washington, Thomas
Jefferson, John Quincy Adams and
Andrew Jackson.
The specimens were collected
by a US lawyer, with the collection
donated to the museum after he
died in 1860.
The display has sparked
speculation about whether one
day the gravity-defying hair
sported by Donald Trump could
be added to the collection.
