ALL pharmacists know you can patent a drug molecule - but how about trademarking a smell?.
US toymaker Hasbro is claiming an intellectual property victory after managing to trademark the characteristic smell of Play-Doh modelling clay.
It is, after all, the smell of childhood, with the company announcing on Fri that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has officially recognised the distinctive odour of Play-Doh as a registered trademark of the brand.
It is formally described as a "sweet, slightly musky, vanilla-like fragrance, with slight overtones of cherry and the natural smell of a salted, wheat-based dough".
A Hasbro spokesman said "by officially trademarking the iconic scent, we are able to protect an invaluable point of connection between the brand and fans for years to come".
Last weekend's Royal Wedding could end up having some positive health effects, particularly when it comes to eating vegies.
A supermarket in Auckland reported running out of cucumbers last Fri in the lead up to the event, as hundreds of customers stocked up so they could serve cucumber sandwiches to guests at viewing parties.
