STUCK in the middle.
A US woman found herself the
centre of an emergency situation
after she slipped and fell from the
top of a two-storey building and
got wedged between it and the
building beside it.
The woman had been out for a
cigarette when she lost her
footing, and in a strike of supreme
luck, got wedged between the
buildings one metre before she
would have smashed into the ground.
It took firefighters four hours to
free the woman.
During the rescue firefighters
provided a heater for the woman
in the near freezing conditions,
then installed braces to support
her before dropping in an airbag
to slightly spread the walls. Next
the firefighters cut a window in
the wall of one building and
helped soak the woman in
slippery suds before helping to
pull her out of the wall.
The woman was then taken to
hospital with minor injuries.

A jeweller, Jessica Mindich, in
the US state of New Jersey is
doing her bit to help get guns and
bullets off the street and keeping
people alive and gun-shot injury
free, by turning bullets into
jewellery.
Described as “a series of pieces
that embody the gun's
transformation from a destructive
weapon to a powerful symbol of
renewal”, the jewellery is made
from guns and bullets recovered
during the Newark Police
Department's buyback program,
including steel bangles and cuffs.
A portion of the proceeds from
the sale of the items then goes to
fund the gun buy-back amnesty
programs.
Thus far, the jewellery has
fetched around US$20,000 for the
amnesty programs, with modest
Mindich telling media that
“everybody has the power to do
something little, something small
to make a difference”.
