IF YOU thought fish oil capsules were your heart's best friend, think again.
A quirky finding from a study in BMJ Medicine reveals that these uber popular pharmacy supplements might increase your trips to the cardiologist.
The study, which involved over 400,000 UK Biobank volunteers, showed that those with healthy tickers saw an increased risk in stroke and heart disease, while those in poor heart health benefited from the supplement's protective boost.
Interestingly, the regular fish oil aficionados, typically older folks who prefer their fish oily, encountered mixed results.
Women and non-smokers, in particular, faced a slightly higher risk of heart complications.
Researchers are left pondering whether fish oil is more of a capricious friend, necessitating further studies to clarify its true effects on heart health.
So, the next time you reach for that fish oil bottle, do consider the status of your heart health before popping them in.
