PANIC-BUYING has affected availability of many items through the COVID-19 crisis.
Toilet paper, mince, analgesics are in short supply - but in the US things have gone to a whole new level with a major issue arising around the supply of baby chickens.
According to the New York Times, "people are panic-buying chickens like they did toilet paper," apparently in a bid towards self-sufficiency in terms of eggs (and meat!) as well as seeking comfort in the form of some feathery friends.
The report notes that the long-term trend is for sales of baby chicks to rise during periods of uncertainty, such as stock market downturns and even presidential election years.
And the regular nightly appearances of America's top medico on TV during the crisis has prompted a Rochester, New York donut shop to create a new sweet treat in his honour.
Dr Anthony Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, is printed on edible paper atop a layer of buttercream frosting.
Donuts Delite is offering them for US$20 a dozen - of course for take-out or delivery only.
