THE good looks of kangaroos
and koalas are stealing all the
attention from scientists, or at
least that’s what a new Australian
study has found.
Published in the Mammal
Review Journal, the study says
“global and national conservation
funding largely overlooks non-charismatic
species”, which may
arguably be most the in need of
research.
Species were broken up into the
good (kangaroos and koalas), the
bad (invasive species like rabbits,
cats and foxes) and the ugly (bats
and rodents).
Furthermore, the studies on
the good (read cute) animals
have largely focused on their
physiology and anatomy, while
research on the bad has revolved
around controlling these species.
Despite making up nearly half of
Australian terrestrial mammals,
scientists have done little more
than catalogue the existence of
the ugly species.

In Ohio, officers were called to
a home in the middle of the night
following reports of gunshots and
were four hours into a standoff
when they heard snoring.
Police moved in to arrest the
suspect, whom they found fast
asleep in bed.
The man was charged with
counts of inducing panic and
using weapons while intoxicated,
but it’s not clear why he fired
shots at a bed and wall.
During the stand off, a police
vehicle was outside with its lights
on, negotiators tried calling him
using a bullhorn and officers
broke a window to send in an
electronic surveillance device
The man is hard of hearing and
was startled, but cordial when
police woke him.
