€40.6m Sanofi fine

SANOFI has been ordered to pay €40.6m in penalties for a “smear campaign” in France targeting generic versions of Plavix. The French competition authority alleged that Sanofi’s sales force criticised the generics when talking with pharmacists and doctors in 2009 and 2010, as well as urging medical practitioners not to allow substitution on prescriptions. Plavix was the most costly medicine for France’s health system in 2008, costing €625m. Sanofi said it’s “reviewing all the points to prepare an appeal”.
