NSW community pharmacists can now access free training to allow them to offer treatment for uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs).
The training, which will be offered through the Australasian College of Pharmacy, will provide pharmacists with the necessary training to take part in the NSW Govt's imminent state-wide trial of UTI treatment by pharmacists.
The training will consist of a short online training module delivered through the College, and will be complimentary for all community pharmacists in NSW.
Participating pharmacies will also be required to register their expression of interest via a form to participate in the trial with the University of Newcastle.
The trial's objective is to improve patients' access to everyday healthcare, offering patients an option to seek treatment for UTIs when they are unable to access a GP, stated the Guild.
"We're very excited to see training for this trial begin," said NSW Guild branch President, David Heffernan.
"People who have been forced to choose between suffering from a UTI while they wait for a doctor's appointment or presenting at an emergency department now have another option.
"This will make a real difference to people's lives," said Heffernan.
College President Michelle Bou-Samra explained that "the College's uncomplicated cystitis treatment course fulfils the training requirements for NSW Health's state-wide pilot.
"As the leading education provider...our aim is to ensure NSW community pharmacists have access to the latest information."
The trial will be expanded in Jul to allow appropriately trained pharmacists to renew prescriptions of oral contraceptives and will be followed by a state-wide pilot of pharmacists treating a wider range of minor ailments.
