Pharmacy Daily | Further guidelines delay

The Pharmacy Board of Australia has further postponed the introduction of new guidelines on Expiry of compounded parenteral medicines, after consultation with stakeholders and the TGA. The Guidelines for compounding of medicines were implemented effective from 28 Apr with the exception of the parenteral medicines section which was delayed for 3 months (PD 12 Jun). In a communiqué issued yesterday the Board said it was thankful for feedback from pharmacists and other attendees at stakeholder meetings held in Melbourne and Sydney, and has agreed to “further develop the guidance in consultation with TGA and stakeholders during the next six months”. At this stage a specific date to introduce the relevant guidance has not been finalised, with the implementation depending on the progress achieved over the coming months while the Board reviews and addresses input on the expiry of compounded sterile injectable medicines received to date. In the meantime pharmacists compounding medicines are advised to refer to frequently asked questions on the Board website “and to meet their obligations outlined in relevant legislation and practice standards”.
