A NEW analysis of global evidence suggests that experiencing gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM)during pregnancy is linked with a decline in intellectual function among mothers, and may increase the risk of neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism spectrum disorder and ADHD in children.
The systematic review and metaanalysis of 48 observational studies involving over nine million pregnancies, has not yet been published, but is being presented at the annual meeting of The European Association for the Study of Diabetes in Vienna this week.
While the study cannot determine causality, the authors said that given the increasing prevalence of gestational diabetes in pregnancies, the findings underscore the importance of accurate management and early screening to reduce and detect potential neurocognitive complications for both mothers during pregnancy and children after birth.
