Pharmacy Daily | Guild: unity on 6CPA

THE Pharmacy Guild of Australia has said in the lead up to the Sixth Community Pharmacy Agreement (6CPA) negotiations that there is a unity of purpose in pharmacy. Writing in forefront, Guild executive director David Quilty said the pharmacy sector needed to demonstrate to the Federal Government that investing in medication management was a cost-effective way to deliver better health outcomes and save more money across the health system. “There is overwhelming evidence that pharmacist-led interventions following hospital discharge significantly reduce adverse medicine events and readmissions. “Yet, we do not have a coordinated or funded medicine reconciliation process in Australia for patients leaving either public or private hospitals.” Quilty said the Guild and the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA) were working closely together to prepare a “compelling case to take to government, and that its approach was in line with the objectives of other pharmacy organisations including Professional Pharmacists Australia (PPA). PSA national president Grant Kardachi said it had long advocated for a collaborative approach to negotiations while looking for further opportunities for the profession. Medication management was a key tenet of the Quality Use of Medicines and so investment in this area was critical, he said. A PPA spokesperson said the organisation supported what the Guild was calling for.
