THIS week is NAIDOC Week, with the theme of Heal Country. This is an important time to come together and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture, to listen to Indigenous people share their knowledge of 60,000 years of history through their stories, and connecting the past to the present.
Community pharmacists can play an important role to Heal Country within their communities by developing closer relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and organisations and assist in the delivery of better primary healthcare outcomes and by investigating opportunities to work with them to improve the community pharmacy services we provide.
Community pharmacies working with Aboriginal Health Practitioners and Aboriginal Health Workers can help to deliver medication education. They are a vital part of medication education in remote clinics and, the lynchpin to successful pharmacy services, is that relationship between pharmacists and Aboriginal Health Practitioners working as a team to help patients get the best results out of their medication.
