New hepatitis hope

PATIENTS with hepatitis C genotype 1 infection (the most difficult to treat) have new hope after researchers found a combination of drugs which suppresses the virus. The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, involved patients who had not responded to previous treatment with PEG-interferon alfa and ribavirin, and saw them treated with a combination of two investigational direct-acting antiviral agents (daclatasvir and asunaprevir) alone, or a combination of the former two drugs plus PEG-interferon alfa-2a and ribavirin. All ten patients who were given the four drug treatment had sustained virologic response with undetectable virus at the end of treatment and at 12 weeks after stopping treatment, whilst four of the 11 patients given the two direct-acting antiviral agents only also achieved sustained virologic response.
