New pharmacy migration

RECEIVING a skills assessment
letter from the Australian
Pharmacy Council will not
guarantee an applicant’s Expression
of Interest will result in an
invitation to apply for a skilled
migration visa, under the
Department of Immigration and
Citizenship’s (DIAC) new skilled
migration program.
According to the Australian
Pharmacy Council (APC), the DIAC
will manage the number of
overseas pharmacists granted visas
based on economic need and
regardless of how many
pharmacists are issued with a skills
assessment letter from the APC.
Under the new program
individuals on the SOL will be
required to submit an Expression of
Interest regarding working as a
pharmacist to the DIAC through
SkillSelect, an online service.
The DIAC’s program will limit the
number of places granted to all
professions on the SOL through
SkillSelect, meaning that there will
be a limited number of Expressions
of Interest accepted for each
profession based on demand, in
order to ensure that no one
profession skews the skilled
migration numbers and that
genuine areas of skill shortages are
addressed through migration.
“This change means that DIAC
will be fully in control of the
numbers of overseas pharmacists
selected to apply for a skilled
migration visa and that numbers
and timing of these invitations will
be entirely up to the Minister for
Immigration and Citizenship,” a
statement from the Australian
Pharmacy Council said.
“The ACP will continue in its role
as assessing authority for
pharmacists in Australia and will
work closely with DIAC to ensure
that these changes are communicated
to all relevant stakeholders,”
the statement added.
