MALARIA treatments are frequently given too late to manage some of the complications but new work published in The Journal of Clinical Investigation has indicated that some commonly available drugs may be helpful.
In cerebral malaria parasite-filled red blood cells can become "sticky", clump together in the brain and cause haemorrhage, but adding irbesartin to chloroquine was shown to reduce deaths in mice.
Scientists are very excited by the results adding that cholesterol-lowering statins, which have anti-inflammatory effects and are also available as cheap generics, also "worked beautifully" in lab tests.
