PHARMACISTS across New South Wales will soon be able to treat four specific skin conditions as part of the expanded NSW Pharmacy Trial.
Luke Kelly, President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA) New South Wales, expressed strong support for this expansion.
"Community pharmacists will be trained to treat four skin conditions, making treatment for conditions like impetigo, shingles, eczema, and mild plaque psoriasis more accessible across our state," Kelly said.
He emphasised the critical role pharmacists play in strengthening the healthcare system, highlighting the benefits of the NSW Pharmacy Trial in providing safe treatment.
"For skin conditions like shingles, acute eczema, mild plaque psoriasis, and impetigo, timely treatment is essential to relieve discomfort, prevent complications, and improve patient outcomes," commented Kelly.
He noted that New South Wales pharmacists have already supported thousands of patients with various health concerns, including uncomplicated urinary tract infections (PD 14 May) and resupply of oral contraceptives.
The inclusion of skin conditions in the trial will further enhance pharmacists' ability to offer accessible care.
The expansion also includes increased remuneration for pharmacists providing consultations for skin conditions, reflecting their clinical expertise and the costs of administration.
"Increased support for pharmacists ensures these services remain available to patients across the state at no cost," Kelly said.
