NZ funds $78m research

NEW Zealand Science and Innovation Minister Steven Joyce and Health Minister Tony Ryall announced this week a total of NZ$78m in health research funding as part of the 2014 Health Research Council of NZ’s funding round. An Explorer Grant of NZ$150,000 was awarded to Professor Gregory Cook of the University of Otago to look into designing metabiotics to combat multidrug-resistant pathogens. Dr Janak de Zoysa of the Waitemata District Health Board’s trial of 100 New Zealand patients receiving allopurinol or placebo to determine whether therapy to lower uric acid could slow the progression of chronic kidney disease, among other effects, received NZ$990,685 in funding. The funding was increased by almost $18m from last year due to the release of funds from maturing contracts, Joyce said.
