OTC advisory committee

THE Therapeutic Goods
Administration has named the
members of its new Advisory
Committee on Non-prescriptoin
Medicines, which has been formed
to advise and make
recommendations regarding the
entry of non-prescription medicines
on the Australian Register of
Therapeutic Goods.
The ACNM supersedes the TGA’s
Medicines Evaluation Committee.
The new committee is chaired by
Professor David Story from RMIT,
who’s also chair of the Joint Expert
Committee on Labelling
Requirements for Medicines.
Other members include Mary
Emanuel, QUM manager with the
Australian Self-Medication Industry
and Professor Joan Faoagali,
Director of Microbiology at Princess
Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane.
Associate Professor John Gullotta,
who’s a GP, past president of the
AMA in NSW and a registered
pharmacist is also on the
committee, along with Clinical
Associate Peter Goldswain from
Royal Perth Hospital who’s currently
the hospital’s chairman of the Drug
and Therapeutics Committee.
Other members include
paediatrician Professor Henry
Kilham from Westmead Children’s
Hospital, David Newgreen who’s a
Project Pharmacist with the
Pharmacy Board of Victoria and an
honorary fellow of the University of
Melbourne’s dept of pharmacology
and Debra Petrys who’s a
representative of the Consumer
Health Forum.
The committee also includes
pharmacists Emeritus Professor
Barry Reed from Monash University,
NHMRC director Professor Michael
Roberts and Professor Andrew
Somogyi from the University of
Adelaide, with the final member
being retired pharmaceutical
manufacturing executive George
Rook.
The ACNM will meet on 06 May,
15 Jul, 23 Sep and 25 Nov this year
with the TGA saying that it will
finalise and send evaluation reports
to sponsors one month prior to the
scheduled meeting dates.
