Fair Work Commission reduces Sunday penalty rates.
Hospitality, fast food and retail workers, including those in the community pharmacy setting will find their Sunday penalty rates cut from double time to time and a half under the General Retail Industry Award 2010, under a Fair Work Commission decision today. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has promised to honour the ruling.
Russell Zimmerman, executive director of the Australian Retail Association (ARA), said today’s decision is welcomed by the ARA and its members.
“Reducing these rates from double time to time and a half, will increase retail growth nationally and reduce the unemployment rate in Australia,” Zimmerman said
“With retailers currently paying employees double time on Sundays, many retailers are forced to close their doors on this day, impeding on growth in the retail sector.”
The ARA said it will work with the Commission to ensure the decision is implemented correctly across the board.
